Divers have found the wreck of a cargo ship that sank 113 years ago off Cape Schanck on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The SS Alert was returning from East Gippsland when it was swamped, claiming 15 lives.

Melbourne diver Mark Ryan and his friends have spent several years searching for the wreckage and he says it is in remarkably good shape.

"It's in 80 metres of water, which is dark at the best of times," he said.

"This was a particularly dark day and we could really only see what was in our torch beams. Just seeing the boilers and the engine illuminating in our torch beam was exciting.

"We were expecting it to be quite broken up and probably the only thing left of it was the boilers, but in fact when we got down, the whole ship was intact.

"The bow was intact, the stern was very much intact, the whole hull was just sitting there like a ship on the bottom."
