Mt. Moses / Monastery St. Catherina / Dahab
St. Katherina's Monastery is the oldest known, continually-lived-in monastery in the world and is still functioning today with around 22 Greek Orthodox monks, and a collection of Icons and library of scriptures second only to the Vatican in Rome.
St. Katherina
a martyr from Alexandria, was seen in a vision on the top of Mount Sinai so Byzantine Empress Helena erected a small chapel in the 4th century AD in honour of her. Emperor Justinian built a fortress and created the Monastery, located at the foot of the mountains. Now there is a collection of small buildings, of differnt types, built at different times, crowded together. The gardens include a grapevine and orchard of lemons, oranges, olives, pears and apricots. Access around the Monastery is to the chapel, the room of bones and a part of the collection of icons and jewelled crosses. Please respect this holy place and dress in a conservative way. There is a small town nearby with a collection of cheap hotels. Mount St. Katherina is the highest peak in Egypt, at 2,641 meters.

Mount Sinai
known as Mount Moses by the locals, rising to 2,285 meters above sea level, is most famous as the place where Moses is reputed to have received the Ten Commandments. Christian, Muslim and Jewish pilgrims come from all over the world to watch the sunrise from the summit. On a clear day you can see over all Sinai and even to the Red Sea. And afterwards it is always a good idea to enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the city of art, Dahab.
